Kindergarten
Kindergarten is a part of the education system, and is an important arena for children’s all-round development through care, play and learning.
In Norway, 9 out of 10 children go to kindergarten. More 1-year-olds now go to kindergarten after the right to kindergarten places was expanded. Today, 8 out of 10 1-year-olds go to kindergarten.
There are fewer and fewer of the smallest kindergartens, and the trend is for fewer and larger kindergartens.
Just over half of kindergartens are private, and half of all children go to a private kindergarten.
Nearly all kindergartens meet the core staff ratio requirements, and 7 in 10 kindergartens meet the teacher-to-child ratio requirement. There are an average of 13 children for each kindergarten teacher in both municipal and private kindergartens.
4 per cent of children in kindergarten receive special education support.
2 in 10 children who attend kindergarten are speakers of minority languages.
