The Norwegian Education Mirror 2022
Upper secondary school education
In Norway, everyone has the right to upper secondary school education after having completed primary and lower secondary school, a right that most people today make use of. 98 per cent of pupils who finished lower secondary school in 2021 went on to upper secondary school study that same autumn.
In the 2021-2022 school year, pupils in Level Vg1 could choose between 15 education programmes: 5 general study programmes and 10 vocational programmes. Nearly as many pupils choose vocational programmes as general study programmes in Level Vg1.
78 per cent of applicants received an apprenticeship contract with a company. There were a 46,700 apprentices in Norway in autumn 2021.
20 per cent of apprentices are adults, and 1 in 4 adult apprentices work in Healthcare, Child and Youth development.
Never before have so many young people completed and passed. 80 per cent of those who started Level Vg1 in 2015 completed their studies or professional qualifications within two years of the standard time. The completion rate is higher in general study programmes than in vocational programmes.
